Milan crash out of Europe

ARRIGO SACCHI came to AC Milan with one immediate task, to take them into the quarter-finals of the European Cup. He failed. Against all the odds beneath the towering stands of the San Siro stadium, Rosenborg, the unheralded champions of Norway, beat Milan 2-1 to leave the Italians languishing in group D of the Champions' League.

For Sacchi, it was the stuff of nightmares. He resigned as Italy coach at the weekend so that he could take his place on the Milan bench last night, only to see Harald Brattbakk put Rosenborg ahead after 29 minutes. Christophe Dugarry equalised on half-time, but Vegard Heggem restored Rosenborg's lead after 69 minutes. Thus Rosenborg and not Milan will meet Juventus in the last eight, leaving FC Porto, the group D winners, who won 2-0 at IFK Gothenburg last night, to take on Manchester United
